Meeting of the Board of Directors
November 11, 2017

The 210th Meeting of the Board of Directors of the Capital District Kiwanis Foundation was held on November 11, 2017 at the Fredericksburg Hospitality House Hotel and Conference Center. President Nancy Simonelli opened the meeting at 10:00 AM. Mike Dasovich led the Pledge of Allegiance. Andrew Wong gave the invocation.

Introduction of Guests-

Approval of agenda – Motion to accept the agenda was made by John Meyers. 2nd by Ed Daley . Motion passed.

Minutes of the August 12, 2017 meeting – Minutes were emailed to board members. Motion to accept the minutes as circulated was made by Hi Nicely. 2nd by Gary Boswell. Motion passed.

Treasurer report: Tim Wesling emailed the Treasurer’s report to the board members. A motion to accept the report was made by Mike Dasovich . Seconded by Charles Marks. Motion passed.

Life Membership –Charles Adams reported  7 new life members since the last meeting.

Caring Corner - Bernice Oden will be in charge of the baskets for this year. She and Nancy Simonelli will visit the hotel to arrange space for the Caring Corner. Nancy sent out new flyers for Reston for basket donations. Bernice said we are shooting for 50 baskets this year. There were 42 last year.

Ducky Derby – Charles Marks reported that all certificates and checks should be mailed to him.     All Division Directors are asked to obtain or donate $50 gift cards as prizes for the Ducky Derby. The goal for 2018 is $10,000 net. We need to gross $11,500 to cover the cost of the cash prizes. Certificates should be ready to hand out at the February meeting for each division.

Founder’s Society- No Report

Finance Committee Report- John Meyers reported that we are obligated to give 5% of our monies on a 5 quarter f=rolling average which is about $50,000.The new Investment policy was reviewed and the Finance Committee recommends its adoption. A new Investment firm is to be chosen. The committee recommends the Janney Company. A motion was made by Charles Adams and seconded by Bernice Oden to make the Janney Company our new Investment manager. Motion passed. Policy statements to be voted on at the February meeting.

Financial Advisor's Report - Bob Cressy

New. Business

CDKF Budget-2017-2018
Office supplies increased to $2,000 to cover cost of new computer for Executive Secretary, Award expenses will increase to $1000 to cover cost of new supply of Life member rings and other awards.
Grant amounts will be increased from $10,000 to $20,000.. Matching scholarships will be $5,000 instead of $4,000.
A motion to approve the revised budget was made by Ed Daley. Second by Bernice Oden. Motion passed.

Grants Committee Report- Andrew Wong
There were three grants to be considered.

  1. Waynesboro Kiwanis- Requested $5,000 for their literacy program. The club will donate $4,000. The committee recommends $2,000.
  2. Westminster Kiwanis- Leadership Skills program to impact 150 students. The club will donate $3,000. The committee recommends $2,000.
  3. Division 213-3 clubs- Soundscape project. To teach positive life skills through music. The request is for $4,000. The 3 clubs will donate $2,500. The committee declined to fund the grant since the funds were to be used for salaries, They can resubmit with change in use of the funds.

      A motion was made by Andrew Wong for $2,000 each for Waynesboro Kiwanis and  
      Westminster Kiwanis. An amendment was made to the motion by Charles marks to increase 
      Waynesboro’s grant to $4,000 and $3,000 for Westminster. Second by Ed Daley .Motion

      There is a need to get information about grants out to the clubs so more clubs will apply.
      Directors need to be more involved in getting the word out to the clubs.

Other New Business
Nancy Simonelli passed out club membership numbers to be used in getting more donations.

Ellis Stroup Scholarship- Criteria for the award will be presented by Kelly Boswell at the February Board meeting.

Teenager of the Year forms are on the CDKF web site. $2,500 will be awarded to the recipient which will be presented at the August Convention.

New Brochure needed for CDKF to pass out to businesses. Nancy Simonelli will ask Jennifer Wolff about a new design.

There being no further business, Charles Adams made a motion to adjourn. Second by Mike Dasovich. President Simonelli adjourned the meeting. The next Board meeting will be on February 10, 2018 at the Fredericksburg Hospitality House and Conference Center.
